Los dilemas morales plantearon un problema de adaptaci\u00f3n recurrente para los hom\u00ednidos ancestrales, cuya vida social cooperativa creaba m\u00faltiples responsabilidades para con los dem\u00e1s. Para muchos dilemas, lograr un equilibrio entre dos valores en conflicto (un juicio de compromiso) habr\u00eda promovido la idoneidad en lugar de descuidar un valor para satisfacer completamente al otro (un juicio extremo).<br \/>\nProponemos que la selecci\u00f3n natural favoreci\u00f3 la evoluci\u00f3n de un sistema cognitivo dise\u00f1ado para hacer concesiones entre valores morales en conflicto. Sus c\u00e1lculos no conscientes responden a los dilemas mediante la construcci\u00f3n de &#8220;funciones de correcci\u00f3n&#8221;: representaciones temporales espec\u00edficas de la situaci\u00f3n en cuesti\u00f3n. Una funci\u00f3n de rectitud representa, en forma compacta, una ordenaci\u00f3n de todas las soluciones que la mente puede concebir (sean factibles o no) en t\u00e9rminos de rectitud moral. Un algoritmo de optimizaci\u00f3n selecciona, entre las soluciones factibles, aquella con el mayor nivel de correcci\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>La hip\u00f3tesis del sistema de compensaci\u00f3n moral hace varias predicciones novedosas: las personas hacen juicios de compromiso, los juicios responden a incentivos, los juicios respetan los axiomas de la elecci\u00f3n racional y los juicios responden coherentemente a variables moralmente relevantes (como la voluntad, la justicia y la reciprocidad). Probamos con \u00e9xito estas predicciones usando un nuevo tipo del dilema del tranv\u00eda. Este dilema tiene dos caracter\u00edsticas originales: admite juicios tanto extremos como de compromiso, y permite variar sistem\u00e1ticamente los incentivos, en este caso, el costo humano de salvar vidas.
